The Harry Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe was the inspiration for the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. “There’s a buyer out there for every property,” Strickland MANSIONS Strickland expects showings to pick up in September and October, as the leaf-peeping season reaches its heights. Strickland and Handwerk both acknowledged it could take a year to sell the property. His parents, who have invested in numerous properties, personally renovated the home, room by room. He’s also quick to show photos of the home’s reduced state when his parents rescued it from a wrecking crew. For example, he said Asa Packer built the home so close to his own residence because he wanted to keep an eye on his son. Handwerk enjoys telling stories about the Packer family and the history of the home, which his parents bought in 1984. “Where do you find a mirror that’s 14-feet tall?” asks Handwerk, who is studying business administration. Few of his fellow students at Villanova University near Philadelphia are living in such style. On a tour last week of the house, Handwerk took pleasure in pointing out special features of the home. He said the inn attracts guests from all over the country, and even overseas, many of whom return. The Packard Manor home was built in 1915 by the co-founder of Packard Motor Cars, William Packard and his wife Katherine. His parents live in Florida during the week, so he takes care of the property and runs the B&B while they are away. Handwerk, 22, has lived on and off in the mansion since he was born. That’s where Taylor Handwerk, the owners’ son, lives. The sales price includes an adjacent four-bedroom carriage house that dates to 1861. “We’re talking about a $1.7 million property in a spot where homes sell for $39,000,” Strickland said It has some of the lowest home prices in Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties, and the incomes to match. But no one would mistake the remote, former coal-mining village for a quaint New England college town. Jim Thorpe has become a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts who come to bike and hike. The mansion, and its sister property, the Asa Packer Mansion, now a museum, stand out among the modest brick row homes in the small borough in Carbon County. “We’re talking about a piece of history.” He said it’s a healthy amount of activity, given the home’s price, location and the time of year. Since April, Strickland’s arranged six showings, including one for an Allentown surgeon. Each floor boasts 1,500 square feet, ample space for one or even two apartments on each level. He also thinks if zoning permits, the home could be divided into condos. The property has close access to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He thinks an executive from Philadelphia might want the home as a getaway, or a company may buy it as a corporate retreat. Strickland knows he needs to find just the right buyer for the property. The current owners, Robert and Patricia Handwerk, will include the furniture in the bedroom suites in the sales price, which could ease a deal from one innkeeper to another. The company also has marketing the property to prospective bed and breakfast owners.
